I was fortunate to hear A.L Kennedy give the keynote speech at Nottingham Festival of Words today. I don’t know if she writes poetry, but you can find quotes from the marvelous A.L on the Poetry Submissions and Poets on poetry pages of this blog.
Here are some of the things she said.
Write for a reader who is of approximately the same intelligence as you.
Don’t write as if you like them; write as if you love them.
If you get stuck, do something else. Don’t sit there practising being stuck.
Anyone who can communicate enough to buy a bus ticket can write if they want to.It is a question of making things clear.
Writing should be fun. But know it is going to take a lot of hard work.
